The Government has stopped Gemstones mining in Mwatate,Taita Taveta county after three people were reportedly trapped in one of the mining sites.

“We cannot be working to make wealth and on the other hand loosing lives,” Mwatate sub-county Deputy County Commissioner, said.

The county government this week ordered for  people living around mining areas to vacate with immediate effect or risk arrest.

“Am asking all of us to take the initiative and report any person who will go on working and being here in this place,” the DCC said.

The residents were further advised not to carry out their economic activities at the risk of their own lives.
